Many tried to pass through the Northwest Passage over the last two centuries and hundreds died in the attempt. The stories are legion of misery and starvation, cannibalism, and death by bears or Eskimos; of shipwrecks caused by hidden shoals, violent storms and invading ice. Such tales are apt to encourage the adventure-seeker, until such time as he or she actually sets out along this loneliest of coastlines.

John Buchan described the passage as ‘a part of the globe having no care for human life, not built to man’s scale; a remnant of the Ice Age which long ago withered the world.’

This sounds a touch flowery, but even the down-to-earth Encyclopaedia Britannica is unusually descriptive:
